Stamps Featuring Silent Film Performers
John Bunny died in April, 1915, so these stamps are probably from around 1914-1915.
These stamps were issued for the Vitagraph serial The Goddess (1915) with Anita Stewart. The top three are from episode three, and the bottom three are from episode four.
In the 1993 the United States Postal Service commissioned Al Hirschfeld to draw carictures of silent film icons for special commemorative postage stamps. Included in this group were Rudolph Valentino, Clara Bow, Charlie Chaplin, Lon Chaney, John Gilbert, Zasu Pitts, Harold Lloyd, the Keystone Cops, Theda Bara, and Buster Keaton. A commemorative book was also issued.
In 1975, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp honoring film director D.W. Griffith.
